Winter X Games 12 kicked off in Aspen, Colorodo with four events including Men’s and Women’s Skiing Slopestyle, Snowboard Street Final, and the Snowmobile Freestyle Final. Tom Wallisch took the gold in the men’s skiing, throwing creative spins off the rail section and finishing up with with huge double cork spins at the bottom rewarding him with the highest slopestyle score ever with a 96.00. With the last run of the competition KayavTurski took the women’s gold landing a switch 1080 on the final jump.
Snowboard Street which is an event with rails where the athletes have a time limit to hit a number of features was won by Forest Bailey. Bailey combined a giant backside lipslide on a cargo container and 360 on, 180 off, on the downhill rail.
Sadly Winter X has a sort of somber feeling this year with the recent loss of Sarah Burke, a pioneer in the sport of women’s skiing. The athletes commemorated the loss of Sarah who passed away just over a week ago while training in Utah, by skiing through the SuperPipe together and also by competing in her memory.
