UFC on FX provided a very exciting card with impressive knockouts and submissions. The main event featured two of the top lightweights looking to rebound from a loss. Jim Miller was able to survive the big punches of Melvin Guillard and end the fight with a rear naked choke in the first round. We will take a look at where this puts both Miller and Guillard and what will be next for them as well as the rest of the main card fighters.
The main card started with Pat Barry showing off some new submission defense in route to a left hook KO of Christian Morecraft. Barry was on a two fight losing streak entering the cage and even with his exciting style, he needed a win badly. Nothing could have been better than him getting caught in some bad positions and submissions while on the ground but show the ability to escape. It takes training to move out of an armbar like that and it proves that Barry is working on his ground game. There are several names that could be next for Barry but I would say Matt Mitrione or Gabriel Gonzaga would be most likely. Christian Morecraft is just 1-3 in his UFC career and has been KO'd in all three losses. This may end up being the last time we see him for a while but at only 25 years old, Morecraft can definitely work his way back up. There aren't any easy fights at heavyweight in the UFC anymore.
Bantamweights put on another exciting fight as Mike Easton edged Jared Papazian in a Majority Decision. Easton is now 2-0 in the UFC but I don't think there will be a rush to move him up in talent. He was previously scheduled to fight Ken Stone before an injury gave Papazian the shot and setting that fight up again would be a great match up or perhaps TUF 14 runner up TJ Dillashaw Papazian was making his UFC debut and should get one more chance to get a win with the promotion. He is likely to welcome another UFC newcomer or get a cast member from TUF 14.
Josh Neer found himself in another exciting fight. After getting owned in the stand up game, Neer capitalized on his opportunity to finish the fight when Duane Ludwig stuck his neck out, trying to stand up. Putting Ludwig to sleep with a guillotine choke will solidify Neer's position in the UFC for a while. With a ton of experience, Neer poses a threat to everyone at 170 lbs and with his exciting style I would like to see him against Jon Fitch. Fitch was quickly knocked out by Johnny Hendricks at UFC 141 and will be looking to rebound. Known for his "boring" style, Fitch may be looking harder for the finish and Neer will have no problem coming forward.
Finally, the main eventers. Jim Miller pushed himself right back to the top of the lightweight division. The one match up that comes to mind is a rematch against Gray Maynard. Maynard holds one of the three losses on Miller's record. Jim will be looking to get that one back. Maynard recently lost to Frankie Edgar and will be looking to return strong after suffering defeat for the first time in his career.
Melvin Guillard should get serious. No seriously, he needs to stop getting submitted. Guillard is too explosive and dynamic to be getting caught so often. I completely understand Dana White's frustration. Melvin is a solid contender if he develops at least some submission defense. The formula to beat him is out there and when it is as simple as "take it to the ground" it is too easy. If Dana is looking to send some lightweights over to Strikeforce, I think Melvin would be one of the prospects. He isn't worthy of challenging Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez just yet but a couple of nice wins should put him close.
